PETALING JAYA: A police report is no longer required to apply for a replacement Passport or MyKad.

Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mahmood Adam said Malaysians who lost their passport or MyKad could directly apply for a replacement.

The move, effective March 1, is to cut down red tape and costs.

“The agencies will make a record of the loss and provide the replacement document on the same day.

“A police report is only necessary if the loss was caused by an extraordinary circumstance, such as in a theft or robbery, where the person was victimized,” Mahmood said after launching the ministry's Meet the Consumers Day at IOI Mall in Puchong yesterday.

He said the Immigration Department and National Registration Department, which would record the lost documents and fresh applications, had the capability to nullify the lost documents using existing security features.

“The move will ease the public's inconvenience and is in line with the Government's move to maximize resources and reduce costs,” he said.
